Richard E. Merritt is a personal property appraiser and is an Accredited Member of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) and the International Society of Appraisers (ISA). He is one of only four appraisers within a two-hundred mile radius of the Washington, D. C. metropolitan area that specializes in antique furniture and is accredited by more than one national professional appraisal organization. Richard Merritt has been actively involved for more than twenty years with antiques and quality collectibles in the Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland markets.
Mr. Merritt’s specialization is in Eighteenth, Nineteenth and early Twentieth century American, English and Continental furniture. He is especially knowledgeable about regionalism in American furniture – comparing the preferences for a particular type of furniture form and/or the use of a particular type of wood or construction technique in a given area.
He received a Certificate in Connoisseurship in Fine and Decorative Arts, with a concentration on Early American Furniture, from the George Washington University Center for Professional Development. He has pursued further connoisseurship courses on furniture construction, styles and periods through the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum in Delaware, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
